The department of education, Jorhat College was started from 1962 when the college was established itself. The department of education came into being as separate department with the joining of Mrs. Chandraprabha Bordoloi. The subject education was taught since 1963, with the increase in the number of the students and responding to the demand of the time the major courses in the subject was started in 1995. Since then a number of students have been offering education as a major subject.
Presently the department has three fulltime teachers and one part time teacher. The academic condition in terms of quality of faculty and learning transfer process is healthy and adequate. All the teachers of the department are sincerely engaged in scholarly pursuits.
Founder faculties of the education department :
Students are admitted in major strictly on merit. Students largely come from rural background from low and middle income group. Students are mostly proficient in mother tongue. They also have workable knowledge of Hindi and English. The subject is equally preferred by both the genders.
The teachers of the department improved their skill by participating in various refresher/orientation courses and seminar/workshops. They regularly act as examiner of D.U.

The department has proposed to introduce B.Ed. course under Dibrugarh University and primary teachers’ training programme. Accordingly, necessary proposals are already submitted. Similarly, the department in collaboration with the department of philosophy proposes to organize a National seminar on ‘Indian psychology and its impact on education’.
