Introduction

Department of English, Jorhat college( Amalgamated), has been there since the inception of the College. Several distinguished teachers, such as Retired Principals Ms Sarada Bezbaruah, Dr. Prabhat Ch. Sabhapandit, Dr.Pabitrapran Goswami, and the incumbent Principal Dr.DevabrataSarmah belonged/ belongs to this department. Presently the department has four full time Associate/Assistant Professors and one part-timer.

Mission and Vision

It has been an earnest endeavour on the part of the department to undertake number of academic and co-curricular activities. The department also undertakes various initiatives as its responsibility towards the society.

Course Offered

The department has been offering U.G. Major and Non-major Courses under Dibrugarh University.

Besides it has been rendering its service to the Directorate of Distance Education, Dibrugarh University in UG & PG Courses and UG Course of K.K. Handique Open University.

The Language Laboratory of the Department is being used for the teaching of the local languages & Spoken English.

PROGRAMMES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

Some of the activities and achievements of the English Department of Jorhat College are stated below. They are both academic as well as co-curricular----

  1. A number of lecture programmes have been conducted by the department. Various esteemed personalities have imparted their knowledge to the students of the department and also to students of other streams who attended the programme. The Principal, Dr.DevabrataSarma gave a number of course related talks. Dr.Dilip Kr. Baruah, Mr. Kutubuddin Ahmed, Ms Saba Anish and others delivered lectures on the invitation of the department.
  2. The English department along with the department of History, held a National Symposium on ‘History and Archeology of Doyang Dhansiri Valley’, in collaboration with Mech-Kachari Development council, Assam on 27th April, 2015.
  3. Lecture programme by Dr.Debabrata Sarmah on 25.03.2015, 30.09.2015, 07.03.2017, 10.10.2017 on Colonialist Criticism by Chinua Achebe, Karl Marx and his Communist Manifesto, Rousseau- The Social Contract.
  4. Lecture programme by Saba Anish, assistant prof, department of English, J.B College[Autonomous] on 02.04.2015 on Post Colonialism-Features and Consequences.
  5. Lecture programme by Dr.Kutubuddin Ahmed, ex Hod of English in DKD College on 26.08.2016 on Romanticism.
  6. Lecture programme by Dr.DilipBarua on 30.03.2017 on Shakesperean Tragedy with special reference to King Lear.
  7. A Book review session was organised on 25.10.2017 and Nobel Laureate, Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘The Remains of the Day’ was reviewed by Monisha Duara and Dr Gitartha Goswami of the department.
  8. The Departmental Journal, ‘The Excursus’ is published with ISSN NO.
  9. In addition to the good collection of books of English Literature and Language in the Main Library of the College, the Departmental Library has 500 books of its own.
  10. Departmental Wall Magazine ‘Blossoms’ displays the creative talent of the departmental students every year. It was awarded the third position in the wall magazine competition during the annual college week in 2017.
  11. The Students of our Department are secured second position in the cultural rally competition during the College week 2017.
  12. Field trips and Field Studies are undertaken by the teachers and students of the Department. Baksa Pahar expedition to study the Arlongpira relics of the past was one such trip undertaken on 01.04.2015. A linguistic survey was done in Murmuria Tea Estate on another occasion in Nov 2017. In 2019 our students have done a survey titled “ English Learning Experiences of Students of Selected High Schools of Jorhat” during 2019.
  13. Our Alumni are our pride. The HOD, Mr. PankajpaniSaikia is from our department. All the three faculty members of Women’s University, Jorhat, are from the department. Many others are engaged in various educational institutions, banks, Assam Police etc. We get their support and guidance in achieving our extension goals. PrashantaPuzari and Prakash jyoti Borah conducted one English Language Teaching programme from 07.01.2019 to 12.01.2019 in a Govt. Primary school in Murmuria Tea Estate under the banner of Alumni Association(English).
  14. Research papers have been presented by the faculty members of the department, both in National and International seminars/conferences. Monisha Duara of the department has served as session chair in an International conference organised by NIT, Meghalaya.
  15. Mr. Subhrajyoti Chanda of the department is pursuing his PhD and has done certificate course PGCTE[2012], PGDTE[2015] from IFLU, Hyderabad. He has also completed one UGC sponsored MRP in English Language Education in 2013.
  16. Gitartha Goswami of the Department had been conferred the PhD degree from Tezpur University for his thesis on ‘T.S Eliot: from Crisis to Contemplation’ in 2017.
  17. The results of the department have been satisfactory every year. The department was awarded certificate of appreciation for 100% first class of sixth semester students on 6.8.2016. (Pass % of Major students in Final Exam : 2014-100%, 2015-90%, 2016-100%, 2017- 77%, 2018- 80%, 2019-94%).
  18. The English department along with the department of History, held a National Symposium on ‘History and Archeology of DoyangDhansiri Valley’, in collaboration with Mech-Kachari Development council, Assam on 27th April, 2015.
  19. The Forum for English Studies of the department celebrates important events like Teachers Day, Fresher’s social, Alumni meet etc. on a regular basis. A special event was organised on 09.01.2016 to mark Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary.
  20. Seminar presentation by major students of all the semesters is a norm and group discussion of the non-major students is conducted every year.
  21. The icing on the cake for the department though, was the signing of the letter of COLLABORATION between the English department of Jorhat College and the department of English, Baburaoji Gholap College, Pune, on 26.10.2017.
  22. During 2019-20 session one of our Student Rashmi Gogoi had been enrolled for PG in Baaburaoji College as per the provision of this MoU.
  23. The Department has signed another MoU with the Department of English, Assam Women University on 10-08-2019. As per the provision Mrs Monisha Duara of our Department engaged few classes in the Women University during 2019. Mr Pankajpani Saikia acted as external Evaluator of dissertations in July 2019.
  24. Dr Gitartha Goswami of the Department had been conferred the PhD degree from Tezpur University for his thesis on ‘ T.S Eliot: from Crisis to Contemplation’ in 2017.
  25. The faculty members engage inter disciplinary classes, both within the college and in other colleges and also engage classes for the benefit of the students of the associated schools of the College.
  26. Dr Gitartha Goswami has completed a Minor Research Project Sponsored by ISSR in November 2019 titled Role of Satras in Assamese Nation Building Process: Problems and Prospects.
