Dr Devabrata Sharma, Principal, Jorhat College
Jorhat College (Amal.) was placed in some disadvantages historically. But we decided to turn adversity into prosperity, limitations into the belief that ‘sky is the limit’ and converting collective talent of the Team Jorhat College into something progressive, innovative, imaginative, creative and constructive.
That is why the college has been trying to break apart from its historical weakness with a sense of dedication and commitment towards the service of people and the nation. It wants to inculcate in the new generation ideas of patriotism; selflessness ; service to the needy and the socially weaker, physically challenged and economically needy.
These noble ideas inspired the college to pioneer working for the differently abled (including blind, deaf and dumb etc.) ,those belonging to third gender etc. The college organized the biggest ever event in this part of the country to commemorate the Centenary of Jallianwala bagh massacres so as to inspire the new generation.
The college has broken open its confinement of being a single faculty college by ushering in the science faculty for the first time in its 54 year history. In reverence to the UGC instruction to elevate colleges to PG level, our college is now blessed with PG classes, viz., Sociology, English, Assamese, Education and Political Science. Nearly 100 students have enrolled for the first batch, thus adding another feather to the glorious crown of the college.
Its Golden Jubilee being over in 2012, and Diamond Jubilee being due in 2024, the college family is determined to march ahead in the tortuous but glorious path to finally arrive at its 60th mile post made of diamond.
