The Department of Sociology, Jorhat College (Amalgamated) was started in 1969. The department of Sociology came into being as separate department from the very beginning. Probably, the department is the first department that introduced in Graduation level in Assam and North-East India. Since then the department has been offering Major and Non-Major courses in this subject.
The founder teacher of the department was Mr. Prabir Kumar Bora (Retd. Principal I/C and Vice Principal). Later on he was assisted by two teachers respectively Dr. Deben Chandra Boruah (Retd.) and Late Dr. Prabhash Kumar Bora (Former HOD). Presently the department has three permanent teachers and one part time teacher, Ms. Swapnajyoti Borah, Dr. Diganta Kumar Phukan (HOD), Dr. Biswajit Borah and Ms. Meghali Das. The faculties are always being dedicated and sincere to their duties and responsibilities in academic, curricular and co- curricular activities.
Students are admitted in major on the basis of merit. With the growing demand of aspiring students to pursue graduation in this subject, the department has increased the allotment of seats. No issue of discrimination regarding gender, race, religion, caste, community, class is allowed in admission process. The students are coming from in and outside Assam to the department. They have workable knowledge of Assamese, Hindi and English.
The students of the department are very regular and sincere. They perform very well in extra-curricular activities also. They publish the Sociological Imprint, a students’ journal, a hand-written magazine, “Polosh” and a wall magazine named “Samalay”. Besides, they are encouraged to participate in various district and state level seminar, workshops, debating, quiz, sports competition. The department organize freshmen social, farewell programme, alumni meet, parents meet and observe some important National and state-level occasions for the students.
B.A. (Regular): The College is affiliated to the Dibrugarh University. Hence, the college has to follow the prescribed syllabus of Dibrugarh University. From the beginning till 2013, the TDC course was offered in both Major and Non-Major areas. From 2011, the semester programme was introduced. Presently, the CBCS System has been introduced from 2019.
B.A. (Distance under Dibrugarh University): The department offers B.A. programme in distance mode affiliated to Dibrugarh University. The degree programme under the distance mode is in annual system.
M.A. (Distance under Dibrugarh University): The department also offers M.A. programme in distance mode affiliated to Dibrugarh University. The degree programme under the distance mode is in annual system.
The teachers of the department are always available for personal guidance to the students. They are very helpful to the students and encourage them for future prospects. Teachers regularly interact with the students in academic and personal purposes to meet their needs and aspirations. In addition to this, students with difficulties are encouraged to have personal discussion outside their class-room. Due to this the student-teacher relationship in the department has always remained excellent. Students now feel free to seek advice from any teachers, at any time of the day in the department.
Ms. Arpita Das, 5th Semester, Major in Sociology won Silver Medal in the 9th All India Wado Independent Open Karate-do Championship held in Borodarra, Gujarat in 2018.
Ms. Arpita Das 5th Semester, Major in Sociology won Gold Medal in Kata event and Silver in Kunit event the 7th All Assam Karate Championship, 2019 held in Nagaon.
Mr. Pranjal Baruah won Bronze Medal in the Dibrugarh University Inter College Taikowandow Championship, 2018 under 70-74 KG.
Besides, many students won medals individually in sports, music, debating, literary sections etc.
